As per recent reports, Bengaluru and Delhi are under consideration by the BCCI as potential venues for the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024.
The BCCI has identified Bengaluru and Delhi as potential venues for the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL), aiming for a tournament window between February 22 and March 17. The initial segment of WPL 2024 is planned for Bengaluru, followed by the latter phase, including the knockout matches, in Delhi.
According to ESPNcricinfo’s latest reports, the tournament is scheduled to run from February 22 to March 17, featuring five teams and a total of 22 matches across the two venues. This division of the five-team competition across two venues is strategic, aiming to maintain pitch quality for the 2024 IPL, slated to kick off on March 22.
The Women’s Premier League (WPL) made its debut in 2023, confined to Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Initially contemplating a single-state approach, the BCCI, led by Secretary Jay Shah, opted for two venues – Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium and Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium – to tackle logistical challenges. This choice entails 10 consecutive days of matches at each ground, a departure from the usual IPL and WPL practice of not hosting consecutive matches at the same venue for more than two days.
The Mumbai Indians, victorious in the inaugural season, will defend their title after defeating the Delhi Capitals in last year’s final. For the 2024 season, franchises retained 60 players from the previous season, and an additional 30 players were acquired in the auction, including nine overseas cricketers.
