The upcoming WPL auction is expected to take place in New Delhi, with teams preparing to submit their player retentions by early November.
The Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction is set to be held in New Delhi, though a formal announcement is yet to be made. According to a Cricbuzz report, franchises have been informally informed about the likely venue.
While the official date has not been confirmed, the auction window has now been narrowed to November 26-27. Earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had indicated that the auction would be conducted between November 26 and 29.
The event is expected to conclude in a single day despite being a mega auction. With only five teams participating in the WPL and a maximum squad size of 18 players, the process is unlikely to take long, even if up to 90 players go under the hammer.
Franchises Asked to Submit Retentions by November 5
However, such a large number is improbable, as most teams are expected to retain several players before the auction. The franchises have been asked to submit their list of retained players by November 5.
Each team can retain up to five players, and the retention will affect their player purse. If a franchise retains all five players, it will lose INR 3.5 crore for the No. 1 player, INR 2.5 crore for the second, INR 1.75 crore for the third, INR 1 crore for the fourth, and INR 50 lakh for the fifth. With a total purse of INR 15 crore, five retentions will cost a team INR 9.25 crore.
The BCCI clarified that these values are guideline prices used for salary cap calculations and may not reflect the actual amount paid to players. “While the amount paid to an individual player may differ from guideline price, the total amount based on the number of players retained will be used for salary cap calculation,” the BCCI said in a recent note to the franchises.

The guideline price for retaining an uncapped player is INR 50 lakh, with each team allowed to retain a maximum of two uncapped players. Additionally, a team can retain up to three capped Indian players, while no more than two overseas players can feature in the retention list.
The BCCI has also approved the use of five Right to Match (RTM) options. However, the number of RTMs available to a franchise will depend on how many players it retains. For each player retained, a team will lose one RTM option. For example, a franchise retaining five players will not have any RTM options during the auction, while a team entering the auction without retentions can use RTMs for up to five of its players.
