Yograj Singh revives old controversy
Yograj Singh reignited the match-fixing debate as he questioned why Kapil Dev’s case was never reopened.
Former India cricketer Yograj Singh, father of Yuvraj Singh, has once again launched a sharp attack on legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev. Yograj questioned why the match-fixing case against Kapil Dev was closed and never reopened, claiming that revisiting the case could damage the reputations of several cricket legends.
The controversy dates back to 1997, when former cricketer Manoj Prabhakar accused Kapil of offering him money to underperform. The matter was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). After a detailed inquiry, the CBI found no evidence against Kapil Dev and cleared him of all charges in 2000.
Speaking to InsideSport, Yograj alleged that the case was deliberately shut down to protect big names in Indian cricket, including Kapil Dev and Mohammad Azharuddin. “Ask all the journalists, where is the file of match-lying in the Supreme Court shut down. Who all were involved in match-fixing? First, Kapil Dev’s name was involved, then Azharuddin’s, and a lot of other players. Why was that file closed and not reopened? Because a lot of the heads of legends will roll,” Yograj said.

This is not the first time Yograj has criticised Kapil Dev. In the past, he has also targeted MS Dhoni and Bishan Singh Bedi, accusing them of not treating players fairly. “I talk about Bishan Singh Bedi, Kapil Dev, and MS Dhoni. I can talk about people whom I have been with. They have treated people like s***. Jo galat hai wo galat hai. Two wrongs cannot make one right. I say this openly, that our cricketers and team were destroyed by our captain,” Yograj had said.
He further alleged that several players were unfairly sidelined. “It is not only about Irfan Pathan. You see Gautam Gambhir speaking about it. Virender Sehwag openly said it as well. Harbhajan Singh spoke about how he was put out of the team like a fly. You should arrange a jury to explain why he did what he did. MS Dhoni doesn’t want to answer. One who doesn’t want to answer has a guilty conscience,” he added.
