Yuvraj Singh believes Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should play Ranji Trophy to regain form after struggling in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Speculation about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s participation in the ongoing Ranji Trophy continues, with neither confirming availability for the upcoming round. Meanwhile, youngsters like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant have already committed to playing. The poor form and lack of runs from Rohit and Kohli have increased pressure on them to return to domestic cricket to regain confidence. Rohit has begun training with the Mumbai team, while the Delhi and District Cricket Association awaits Kohli’s confirmation.
Former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh emphasized the importance of domestic cricket for struggling players, urging them to use it as a platform for valuable practice and form recovery, regardless of their stature.
“Domestic cricket is important. I have always felt if you have time and if you are not performing, you should definitely come and play domestic cricket. That is the best way to get practice and game time. I feel domestic cricket is very important if you have the time and if you are not injured,” Yuvraj said at the launch event of the Celebrity Cricket League on Thursday.
Notably, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah are the only Indian players yet to participate in domestic cricket recently. Other team members, including Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shreyas Iyer, played in tournaments like the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophies. Mohammed Shami, recovering from injury, bowled for Bengal in Ranji Trophy and SMAT to regain fitness.
Players like Ishan Kishan and youngsters such as Sarfaraz Khan and Shubman Gill also featured
in domestic competitions like the Buchi Babu and Duleep Trophies. Yuvraj Singh, during a form slump in 2014-15, played seven Ranji matches, scoring 671 runs with three centuries, helping him return to India’s squad. Rohit last played Ranji cricket in 2015, Kohli in 2012.
