Zaheer Khan expressed his expectation that Rohit Sharma might continue as the captain for the 2024 T20 World Cup, emphasizing the importance of experience in leadership.
Former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan has suggested that Rohit Sharma is likely to remain India’s captain for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Despite India’s loss in the 2023 Cricket World Cup final, where Rohit Sharma led the team admirably, Zaheer emphasized the importance of experience in leadership for the upcoming T20 World Cup. He expressed his belief that Rohit’s familiarity with handling various cricket scenarios and pressure situations makes him a strong candidate for continuing as captain.
“The T20 World Cup is just around the corner…you have to go in with experience. You will have to give that preference to the experienced guy, and I will not be surprised if they decide to go ahead with Rohit Sharma himself. He understands handling situations, handling pressure and all those kinds of aspects”, Zaheer said when speaking to Cricbuzz.
“It’s either going to be Rohit Sharma or, depending on how Hardik goes about his rehab, his comeback,” he added.
Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, India faced mixed fortunes in ICC tournaments this year. They suffered a significant defeat in the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia, followed by a resounding victory in the Asia Cup against Sri Lanka. Despite a dominant performance in the World Cup, clinching numerous victories, India faced disappointment once more, losing to Australia in the final. Rohit’s remarkable batting, contributing 597 runs, stood out, but it wasn’t enough for the ultimate win.
Presently, Rohit and Hardik are out of action, so Suryakumar Yadav is captaining India in the ongoing five-game T20I series versus Australia. Under his leadership, India secured consecutive wins in the initial two matches.
