Atiq-uz-Zaman criticized the current Pakistan players for lacking focus during the T20 World Cup attributing it to their habit of traveling with their families, which he claimed distracts them from their game.

Former Pakistan cricketer and Level Four ECB coach Atiq-uz-Zaman has criticized the current Pakistan players for their lack of focus during the T20 World Cup 2024, attributing it to their practice of traveling with their families. Zaman questioned why players need to bring their wives and children to such major tournaments, suggesting that this practice leads to distractions.

“You have created this habit that you take your wife along and people do that, the players’ focus on cricket gets diverted and they are with their wives, and children in the evening. Then at night, you are going to have food at takeaways, watching movies. Begumo ko Saath Leke Ghuume Ki Aadat Hai (They have a habit of roaming around with their wives),” Zaman claimed when speaking on the PakPassion YouTube channel.

The former player lamented what he sees as a culture of undisciplined behavior within Pakistan cricket, emphasizing that players should be more focused, especially during such important events. He argued that players, who earn substantial amounts, should be able to concentrate solely on cricket for the duration of the tournament.

“A system has been created in Pakistan cricket, a culture of no discipline. You are playing such a big event, where is your focus? You are earning crores to focus on cricket, can you not focus on cricket just for 2 weeks?,” he questioned.

Atiq-uz-Zaman then criticized the team’s management, citing excessive support staff and family members staying at the hotel. He questioned whether the team was there to play cricket or on holiday, suggesting that family presence is suitable only for smaller series.

“During out times there used to be one coach and one manager and that was the team. Now you have 17 officials alongside 17 players. I have heard they have booked 60 rooms in the hotel, it’s a joke, have you gonethere to play cricket or on holiday? Why do you allow families in big series? It is understandable if it happens for smaller series, Begum jaan nahi chodti (The wives don’t leave),” Zaman added.

After losing to the USA and India in the league stages, Pakistan was knocked out of the competition. Following their exit, Pakistan player Haris Rauf was involved in a scuffle with a fan outside the team’s hotel while accompanied by his wife. Criticism has also been directed at skipper Babar Azam for team selection and his batting approach.
