IPL commentators have been instructed not to share any photos or videos from the stadium on match days on social media platforms due to the significant investment made by broadcasters in IPL rights.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a firm stance against commentators sharing pictures and videos of live Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 matches. This follows an incident involving a former Indian batter who posted a picture from the stadium during a live game, violating broadcasting rights agreements with IPL partners Star Sports and Viacom18 Media.
Promptly, a BCCI official instructed the former player to remove the post. Another commentator faced a similar situation, gaining over a million views on a live game post. Additionally, an IPL team received a fine of INR 9 lakh for a social media post.
To prevent further breaches, the BCCI has implemented strict measures against players, commentators, and IPL team owners. Emphasizing the significant investment made by broadcasters, the BCCI official reiterated the prohibition on posting videos or photos on match days, with potential fines for guilty franchises.
“The broadcasters have paid big money for IPL rights. So, commentators cannot post videos or photographs on match day on social media. There have been instances where commentators have done an ‘Instagram Live’ or posted a photo from the ground. One video got one million views. Even IPL teams can’t post videos of live games. They can post a limited number of photographs and can give live match updates on their social media platforms. If found guilty, a franchise will be fined,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
To ensure compliance, the BCCI has also designated staff to monitor social media posts from commentators, IPL teams, players, and officials during IPL matches. Players who violated the rules were instructed to remove their posts. The BCCI emphasized that all individuals must be cautious about social media activity on match days. Failure to comply may result in consequences, as the board is actively enforcing these regulations.
