Brian Lara advised team India ahead of the T20 World Cup, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning by coach Rahul Dravid, especially considering the presence of numerous young superstars.
Brian Lara highlighted the necessity for India’s head coach Rahul Dravid to devise a tailored strategy to optimize the performance of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Americas. With eight players retained from the 2022 ICC event, the team relies on the seasoned experience of Kohli and Rohit.
Lara cautioned against overlooking strategic planning amidst a lineup filled with superstars, noting the potential intimidation coaches may face when instructing players of such caliber.
“Sometimes when you have a team with a lot of superstars, you forget the plan and you believe that the superstars can do it. They just have to turn up. Sometimes you may feel, as a coach, intimidated, telling Sir Vivian Richards or Virat Kohli, you know exactly what you expect of them,” Lara said in an interaction with PTI editors organized by Star Sports.
Lara also drew parallels between India’s squad composition and the highly experienced West Indies team of 1987, captained by Sir Vivian Richards, which failed to reach the World Cup semifinals. He acknowledged the allure of relying on seasoned players like Kohli and Rohit but stressed the need for strategic planning. With a mix of experienced and emerging talents in the Indian squad, Lara advised coach Rahul Dravid to formulate a clear plan to harness their potential effectively.
“You’ve got a lot of exciting young players coming out and you also have that sort of conundrum. India have gone with a team that has experience. My advice, and it’s not my criticism, it’s my advice, to Rahul Dravid is to make sure and have a plan,” he stated.
“The team is capable of winning the World Cup. Yes, it’s a team that have maybe a couple of youngsters missing because of the situation. But I still believe that if they plan properly. India could win the World Cup,” Lara concluded.
