According to reports from Cricbuzz, BCCI is considering raising the earnings of Indian domestic players to incentivize their participation in the Ranji Trophy.
BCCI is planning to raise remuneration for domestic players, potentially doubling earnings from INR 75 lakh to INR 1 crore. Led by Ajit Agarkar, the selection committee is tasked with proposing implementation strategies.
Cricbuzz reported that the national selection committee is in discussions regarding the initiative. The objective is to prevent non-IPL domestic players from feeling disadvantaged. Notably, BCCI is contemplating doubling fees for domestic cricketers to address concerns of player welfare and incentivize participation in domestic cricket.
Under the current payment structure, the BCCI offers daily allowances of INR 60,000 to players with over 40 Ranji games, INR 50,000 for 21 to 40 games, and INR 40,000 for 20 games. Reserve players receive INR 30,000, INR 25,000, and INR 20,000, respectively. This means a senior player could potentially earn up to INR 25 lakh if their team reaches the final, while other members could earn between INR 17 lakh and INR 22 lakh. Moreover, players receive earnings from white-ball tournaments like the Vijay Hazare and Mushtaq Ali, with a likelihood of increased remuneration in the upcoming season.
The initiative to boost domestic players’ earnings aims to encourage their participation in the prestigious Ranji Trophy, India’s premier red-ball cricket tournament. Last season, some players prioritized IPL over red-ball cricket due to injury concerns. This move aligns with BCCI’s goal of promoting red-ball cricket. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had previously announced increased match fees for Test players, and cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar suggested doubling or tripling fees for domestic cricketers.
