Chennai Super Kings secured a 28-run win on the road despite Punjab’s commendable bowling performance, resulting in CSK rising to third in the points table.

In the clash between Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings at IPL 2024’s 53rd match, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad sparked a strong start for his team after losing the toss for the 10th time this season. Opening with Ajinkya Rahane, who scored 9 off 7 balls, Gaikwad paired with Daryl Mitchell for a 57-run partnership in 32 balls.

Gaikwad’s promising innings of 32 off 21 balls ended with spinner Rahul Chahar’s dismissal in the 7th over, while Chahar also got Shivam Dube out for a king pair. Harshal Patel further rattled CSK by dismissing Daryl Mitchell and giving MS Dhoni a golden duck. Notably, it was Dhoni’s first time batting at No. 9 in his T20 career. Harshal’s three wickets for 24 runs contributed to PBKS limiting CSK to 167-9 in 20 overs.

Punjab Kings entered the run-chase with optimism, having restricted Chennai Super Kings below the 180-run mark. However, their batting faltered early, losing two wickets in the second over, thanks to Tushar Deshpande’s impactful return after battling the flu. Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh then steadied the innings with a 53-run partnership, the highest of the chase. Yet, their failure to build further partnerships led to defeat, with no other batsman making significant contributions.

Despite being in contention at the end of 8 overs, Punjab’s collapse ensued with two more wickets falling in consecutive overs, leaving them at 72/5 after 10 overs. Chennai then tightened their grip, conceding only 19 runs and taking three wickets in the next 5 overs. Though Chennai aimed for an early finish, Punjab’s resilience pushed the game to the 20th over. Late cameos from lower-order batsmen added some consolation for Punjab in their defeat.
