The Impact Player Rule was lately criticised by Rohit Sharma and BCCI will now be looking forward to discussing it.

The Indian Premier League’s introduction of the “Impact Player” rule has sparked debate within the cricket community. The rule allows teams to substitute a player during the T20 match. However, it has received mixed reviews, with many players and experts expressing concerns. Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma recently voiced his disapproval, highlighting the potential negative impact on all-rounders.

“I generally feel that it is going to hold back (all-rounders) because eventually cricket is played by 11 players, not 12 players. I’m not a big fan of Impact Player (rule). You are taking out so much from the game just to make it a little entertaining for the people,” said Rohit while speaking on the Club Prairie Fire Podcast with Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan.

Sharma elaborated on his concerns, citing specific examples. “But if you look at it genuinely, just the cricketing aspect of it… I can give you so many exampless—guys like Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube are not getting to bowl, which for us is not a good thing,” the veteran opener added.

Interestingly, these thoughts and critics were given importance as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has indicated a willingness to revisit the rule. IPL governing council chairman Arun Dhumal acknowledged the ongoing discussion and emphasised that the rule is not permanent.

“Now that such an observation has been made, we will definitely look into it. We will discuss this with all parties involved and then take a call. There are various pros and cons to any rule that is in place. We are open to any discussion once the season gets over; nothing is cast in stone about its implementation,” Arun Dhumal told The Telegraph on Friday.

Meanwhile, India’s T20 World Cup squad will be announced soon, and the nation will start its World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5th.
