Jofra Archer has spent the past two years sidelined by injuries and while eyeing a return to cricket, he acknowledged the possibility of early retirement if his fitness concerns persist.

Jofra Archer has faced a hard journey over the past two years, sidelined by recurring back and elbow injuries. His absence has deprived him of significant tournaments and series, including the ODI and T20 World Cups, the Ashes, and various franchise competitions. Despite his aspirations to return to competitive cricket, Archer has hinted at the possibility of early retirement if his injuries persist.

Reflecting on his prolonged absence, Archer expressed frustration at his stop-start career and contemplated a potential departure from the game if his physical woes persist. Nonetheless, he remains optimistic about participating in domestic and international cricket events post-recovery.

“I haven’t played cricket for a whole 12 months as yet. Last year I played from January to May. I think the year before that, I played maybe one or two games for Sussex, so you know I’ve had a whole year of nothing. It feels like that sometimes. It’s been a while and honestly, I don’t know if I’ve got another stop-start year in me. That’s the truth, I don’t know if I’ve got another one,” Archer was quoted as saying by Eurosport.

“Worst-case scenario – I don’t really want to think about this – but even if I don’t make it to the World Cup for whatever reason, there’s still the T20 Blast, there’s still the Hundred. There’s still cricket that I haven’t got a chance to play in the last couple of years. So as much as I want to play in the World Cup, if it doesn’t happen for whatever reason, at least I still know I could be somewhat active,” he added.

Having endured setbacks since his return in January 2023, Archer’s ongoing battle with fitness concerns casts doubt on his future. Although hopeful for a comeback in England’s T20 World Cup squad, he remains uncertain due to pending fitness assessments. With teams needing to finalize their squads by May 1, 2024, Archer has less than two weeks to prove his fitness for selection.
