KL Rahul may consider relinquishing his LSG captaincy to focus solely on his batting for the last two games of IPL 2024, as per an anonymous IPL source.
Following Lucknow Super Giants’ defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2024 IPL match, viral videos depicted owner Sanjiv Goenka’s heated discussion with KL Rahul, sparking uncertainty over Rahul’s captaincy for the remaining two games.
With their playoff aspirations dashed, Rahul’s future as skipper is in question. It’s widely believed that Rahul, signed for a record Rs 17 crore in 2022, won’t be retained for IPL 2025. Speculation suggests Rahul may voluntarily step down to focus on batting in the upcoming matches.

An IPL source, speaking anonymously, revealed that while no decision has been made yet, management wouldn’t oppose Rahul’s choice to prioritize batting in the games ahead, considering the five-day gap before their next match against DC.
“There is a five-day gap before the next game against DC. As of now, no decision has been taken but it is understood that if Rahul plans to just concentrate on his batting for the remaining two games, the management won’t mind,” the IPL source told PTI.
SRH’s Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma’s explosive partnership swiftly chased LSG’s target in under 10 overs, contrasting with LSG’s struggle on the same pitch. KL Rahul’s slow start, averaging 136.09 in strike rate, notably hindered LSG’s performance, despite his potential to surpass 500 runs this season.
Although LSG can still reach 16 points by winning their final two matches, improving their net run-rate (-0.760) significantly poses a challenge. Should Rahul opt to step down, Nicholas Pooran, LSG’s vice-captain, will be set to lead for the remaining games against Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians.
