Ahead of the fifth edition of the Lanka Premier League, set to commence on July 1, Sri Lanka Cricket reported an impressive turnout of over 500 overseas players.
The fifth edition of the Lanka Premier League is set to kick off on July 1, with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announcing an overwhelming response from over 500 overseas players, including notable names like Tim Southee, James Neesham, and Mushfiqur Rahim, who have registered for the upcoming auction. However, the governing council is yet to confirm the auction date, although it’s anticipated to be held before the T20 World Cup starting on June 1.
Other prominent registered key players for the upcoming edition of the Lanka Premier League are Tamim Iqbal, Rassie Van Der Dussen, Reeza Hendricks, Rilee Rossouw, Shai Hope, Taskin Ahmed, Lungi Ngidi, Naseem Shah, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Colin Munro, Ish Sodhi, Mark Chapman, Jason Behrendorff, Andre Fletcher, Oshane Thomas, Keemo Paul, and Fabian Allen.
Additionally, Usman Khawaja, Tabraiz Shamsi, Evin Lewis, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Noor Ahmad, Reece Topley, Iftikhar Ahmad, Mohammad Nawaz, Gulbadin Naib, and Ibrahim Zadran are also among the top players.
Concerns arise regarding scheduling conflicts if Sri Lanka reaches the T20 World Cup finals, potentially affecting the LPL’s slated commencement on July 1. The board needs to address this potential clash to ensure a smooth start to the tournament.
The upcoming edition will maintain its format of five teams, playing a total of 24 matches. Each team will face off against the others twice during the league stage, followed by a qualifier, two eliminators, and the final slated for July 21. However, competition looms as the LPL clashes with The Hundred and Major League Cricket (MLC), starting on July 4. With key international players already committing to MLC franchises and others targeted for The Hundred draft, the LPL governing council must swiftly finalize the auction to secure player availability.
