Australian cricket coach Andrew McDonald has assured fans that captain Mitchell Marsh is on course to be fully fit for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Mitchell Marsh was forced to leave the Indian Premier League (IPL) early last month due to a hamstring tear. His recovery has been slower than initially anticipated, but he was able to join a training camp in Brisbane for players not involved in the IPL.
While Marsh was not initially expected to attend the camp due to his injury, his progress allowed him to participate and bat in the nets. However, Australian cricket coach Andrew McDonald clarified that Marsh’s bowling will not be at full fitness until closer to the tournament.
“He likely won’t bowl in the next two weeks here. Bowling will probably start the week before we leave for the Caribbean. We can then gradually increase his workload there. We’ll strategically use him with the ball during the tournament, and our squad has enough all-rounders to provide good coverall,” McDonald told the reporters, as quoted by NDTV.
McDonald acknowledged that Marsh’s recovery has been slower than expected, but there’s ample time for him to get ready before the World Cup, which starts in just under a month. “It’s positive to see the captain back on the field,” he added. However, the coach downplayed concerns about Marsh’s lack of recent match practice. Andrew added that Australia will play warm-up games in Trinidad and Tobago before their opening match against Oman.

“We’re not worried about match fitness. There will be practice games in Trinidad, and if needed, our coaching staff can simulate match conditions during training,” concluded the coach.
Australia will begin their campaign for the T20 World Cup on June 6th against Oman, and they have been placed in Group B alongside England, Namibia, Scotland, and Oman.
