Ricky Ponting, head coach of Delhi Capitals, expressed understanding for Glenn Maxwell’s struggles, highlighting the immense pressure of being a key player alongside Virat Kohli in RCB.
Delhi Capitals’ coach Ricky Ponting empathized with Glenn Maxwell’s struggles, acknowledging the weight of being a prominent player for RCB. Maxwell’s decision to take a break due to mental and physical health concerns wasn’t taken lightly, considering it’s the second time he’s done so in his career.
Ponting emphasized the pressure on players like Maxwell and Virat Kohli in high-profile teams like RCB, where individual performances greatly impact team results. He mentioned Maxwell’s desire to step back and refresh, highlighting the diverse coping mechanisms of players. While some push through challenges to regain form, others, like Maxwell, opt for a break to recharge mentally and physically.
“For someone like Glenn in that team (RCB), he being one of the ‘Big Dogs’ along with Virat, a lot of pressure comes on a couple of players playing in that team. If they don’t perform, the results tend to not follow them,” Ponting told PTI in an exclusive interaction.
“If you see what they have done in the tournament so far, pressure builds up on individual player as well. I read that article today morning that Glenn wants to step aside, just have a few games off and try and refresh,” Ponting said, adding that every individual has its own coping mechanism. Every individual is different right. Some guys would want to get going and push through that and get some runs on board and thus that will change their way of how they think about the game and some guys need to step back and have a break,” he added.

After their 25-run defeat to SRH, RCB is at the bottom of the table with six losses out of seven games. Maxwell’s poor performance, scoring only 32 runs and taking four wickets in six matches, adds to their struggle. Bengaluru will play their next game against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Sunday, April 21.
