Sehwag joked that if Dinesh Karthik’s recent form warranted consideration for the T20 World Cup squad, then MS Dhoni should also be included, reminiscing their past success in the tournament.
Dinesh Karthik, RCB’s 38-year-old wicketkeeper, is smashing boundaries and making a strong case for his inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad with his stellar performances in the ongoing IPL season. Despite his age, Karthik’s form speaks volumes, accumulating 251 runs in 8 matches at an astonishing average of 62.75 and a striking rate of 196.09.
However, amidst the debate surrounding his selection, legendary opener Virender Sehwag offered a humorous take, suggesting that if Karthik’s current form warrants consideration, then MS Dhoni should also be in contention. Sehwag made the remark on the Prairie Fire Podcast, highlighting the dilemma faced by selectors.
“Our producer was being cheeky and was stating ‘You know, Dinesh Karthik made a statement’. So, I said Dinesh Karthik may have made a statement, but that doesn’t mean that he should be a part of the World Cup XI or the World Cup team,” said Sehwag.

“No doubt he has played well, but MS Dhoni has also played well too. So, you should take him also if you are taking Dinesh Karthik. Both of them were there in the first T20 World Cup, which was won by India. So by that logic, take them again, so that we may win the World Cup again. I said it as a joke,” he added.
The BCCI’s selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, will reportedly convene in Delhi to finalize the 15-member squad for the upcoming tournament. The World Cup is set to kick off on June 2 in Dallas and Guyana.
