Virender Sehwag criticized Shubman Gill’s lack of form in IPL 2024 and questioned his inclusion in the T20 World Cup reserves, urging him to improve his performance.
Shubman Gill has not been at his best this IPL 2024 season and has collected a lot of criticism regarding his form. Recently, legendary Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag also weighed in on Gill’s form and took a sly dig at his inclusion in India’s T20 World Cup squad on the reserve list.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Sehwag urged Gill not to take his spot for granted. “I think he’s lucky that his name is in the T20 World Cup reserves. KL Rahul and Ruturaj Gaikwad are not even in that. That’s a good point, and he should be motivated by that. Next time, he should not let his place go once he gets a chance. He should focus on scoring runs at a good strike rate so he doesn’t get replaced.”
Shubman Gill’s struggles in IPL 2024 have raised eyebrows, especially considering his impressive performance last year when he bagged the Orange Cap with a whopping 890 runs. This season, however, the story is quite different. The young batter has managed only 322 runs in 11 matches, averaging a modest 32.20 with just a couple of fifties under his belt.
The criticism of Gill’s performance intensified after his dismal performance against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he could only manage a score of 2 off 7 deliveries.

Citing examples of greats like Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar, Sehwag said, “In my days, we had Ganguly, Tendulkar, Dravid, and Laxman. It doesn’t matter how many runs the other guys scored; these guys didn’t go out because they never stopped scoring runs. How will you drop them if they keep scoring runs? They never gave me a reason to get dropped. This is what Shubman Gill has to learn. Once he returns to the Indian team and plays regularly after the World Cup, he shouldn’t let such an opportunity arise again. Improve your skills and score big, because big scores will eventually save you.”
With the T20 World Cup on the horizon, Gill will need to rediscover his golden touch from last season and translate it into consistent performances for his team. Gill and Co. will next face the Chennai Super Kings on May 10th at Narendra Modi Stadium.
