Lately, PBKS bowling coach Sunil Joshi gave an update on Shikhar Dhawan’s injury and stated that Sam Curran will be continuing in the captaincy role for PBKS.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) opener and skipper Shikhar Dhawan is currently sidelined with an injury and has begun his rehabilitation process, according to the team’s spin bowling coach, Sunil Joshi. Sam Curran has been named the stand-in captain in Dhawan’s absence.
Dhawan missed PBKS’s recent match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) and is expected to be out for at least a week to ten days. “As far as an update on Shikhar Dhawan is concerned, the medical team will assess the situation and inform us. Now, he is in rehab. Sam Curran has been donning the captain’s hat for us in his absence,” Joshi told the reporters, as quoted by India Today.
This isn’t Curran’s first time leading the Punjab Kings. He filled the captaincy role last season when Dhawan was also injured, and his performance instilled confidence in the team management. “He was also the stand-in captain last year when Dhawan was injured, and he led the side well. So, we trust him completely,” Joshi said of Curran.
Earlier, head coach Sanjay Bangar had also indicated a 7–10 day recovery timeline for Dhawan following their loss to RR. Curran’s leadership experience and familiarity with the team make him a natural choice to take the reins during Dhawan’s absence.
The loss of Dhawan, a crucial opening batter, is a setback for PBKS. The last outing against RR saw Atharva Taide come in place of Shikhar as an opener, but he failed to impress, managing only 15 runs in 12 balls. Hopefully, he will get another inning to salvage his score in today’s match against the Mumbai Indians.
