Shubman Gill

GT player David Miller recently opened up after their loss to RCB and gave a subtle reality check to the young skipper, Shubman Gill.

David Miller painted a sobering picture of the team’s struggles under their new captain, Shubman Gill. Despite their past success as champions and runners-up, the Titans are currently languishing at the bottom of the table, with playoff hopes fading fast.

While offering support, Miller acknowledged Gill’s youth and inexperience. “Shubman is an exceptional player, as we all know. He is still young and has a lot to learn. But I feel he is adjusting really well to the captaincy. But I feel it’s a tough one too because the margins are so small,” said Miller in his post-match press conference, as quoted by NDTV.

Miller further pinpointed the absence of the injured Mohammed Shami as a significant factor weakening their bowling attack, especially in the Power Play. “Shami, obviously, was really exceptional in the power play. So, we feel like we kind of miss him in the power play, as he picked up wickets and kept the economy rate down,” said Miller.

This weakness was ruthlessly exposed in their recent loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The Titans conceded a staggering 92 runs in the Power Play while defending a low score, putting themselves in a nearly impossible position from the start.

Miller was not shy about admitting their shortcomings, particularly in handling the pressure of the initial overs. “RCB’s bowlers had better control over their lengths. We faltered on that front, and they [RCB] capitalised, reaching 50–60 runs within a couple of overs,” Miller said.

Looking at the broader season context, Miller pointed out their repeated failures in close games, a stark contrast to their past success. “There are certain games that we potentially should have won. If we had won those two games, things would have been very different. We won crucial moments last year, and this year we just haven’t been able to win those crucial moments,” David concluded.

GT, currently sitting in the 9th position on the IPL points table, will next have their outing against the Chennai Super Kings on May 10th.
