Wanindu Hasaranga is set to lead Sri Lanka’s experienced squad for the upcoming tournament, with Charith Asalanka serving as his deputy, ensuring a strong leadership duo for the team’s T20 WC campaign.
Sri Lanka will prepare for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 with a skilled squad. Wanindu Hasaranga will lead as captain, with Charith Asalanka as his deputy, ensuring strong leadership.
Dunith Wellalage earned a spot despite no T20I experience, joining talents like Kamindu Mendis and Nuwan Thushara. Experienced players like Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Dasun Shanaka bolster the team’s strength.
Sri Lanka also faced tough decisions in their squad, omitting players like Avishka Fernando, Binura Fernando, and Kusal Perera due to recent performances and competition. Thushara’s stellar performance, including a hat-trick, edged him ahead of Binura.
Spin options include Maheesh Theekshana alongside captain Hasaranga, who may move up the order when needed.
In the fast-bowling department, Dushmantha Chameera leads the pack but will face stiff competition from Thushara, Matheesha Pathirana, and Dilshan Madushanka.
Grouped with Bangladesh, Nepal, Netherlands, and South Africa in Group D, Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup journey will begin against South Africa on June 3 in New York. They will face Bangladesh in Dallas on June 8, followed by matches against Nepal and Netherlands on June 12 and June 17 respectively, in Florida and St Lucia.
