Virender Sehwag and Rohan Gavaskar heavily criticized BCCI’s decision to snub Rinku Singh and include biased decisions.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup on April 30th, leaving many surprised by the exclusion of Rinku Singh. The young batter, known for his explosive finishing abilities, was not included in the final 15-member squad but was named as one of four reserves alongside Shubman Gill, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan.
Rinku’s omission sparked debate among former cricketers and experts. He made his T20I debut for India in 2023 against Ireland and has since played 15 matches, scoring 356 runs at a healthy strike rate of 176.24. However, his most recent international appearance was in January 2024 against Afghanistan.
Virender Sehwag, a legendary former Indian cricketer, expressed his disapproval of the selection committee’s decision. “Some players are selected based on past performance. Suryakumar Yadav has a reputation as an explosive hitter, even though he might have off days. Rinku Singh is similar, but younger and less experienced. The selectors might have prioritized experience in this case. Rinku has time on his side and can represent India in the future,” Sehwag explained to Cricbuzz.
Sehwag also commented on the potential future of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in T20 cricket. “After the previous World Cup, there were talks about Rohit and Virat not playing in 2024. This time, I’m confident they won’t be part of the next one either,” Sehwag added.

Interestingly, former India opener Rohan Gavaskar offered a different perspective. “If IPL 2024 performance is the main factor, then why is Mohammed Siraj, who hasn’t picked up many wickets for RCB, included?” Gavaskar asked. He elaborated, highlighting Suryakumar Yadav’s recent struggles for Mumbai Indians (MI) but defending his selection based on reputation.
