The first Test of Ashes 2023 started on June 16. England won the toss and elected to bat first. England continue their Bazball approach against the World Champions Australia. England declared at 393/8 on Day 1 itself. Australia ended on 311/5 on Day 2.
Starting Day 3, Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey started off well, but Alex Carey fell to a peach from James Anderson. Australian captain Pat Cummins came in next, him and Khawaja were playing good and a wicket was not falling.
England needed a wicket desperately, and Ben Stokes the captain came with a great field set-up against Usman Khawaja. He gave the ball to Ollie Robinson, and packed all the areas under the bat of Khawaja. An unorthodox field for the set batter, Ollie Robinson pulled off a great yorker and cleaned up Usman Khawaja with a beauty. The field had given no other option to Khawaja but to try something different, but it didn’t go through.
Ben Stokes’ brilliant captaincy was showered with praise all over by other cricketers and fans. This time it was no less, it was another masterpiece from Ben Stokes – The captain.
