The World Test Championship 2023 final kicked off on June 7, 2023. India won the toss and elected to field first. After getting the early wicket of Usman Khawaja, India were looking solid but David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne kept on fighting but right before lunch, Shardul Thakur got David Warner and right after lunch Mohammed Shami cleaned up Marnus Labuschagne.
With 76/3 on the board, India were looking to bounce back and put their command on the game, but they were not prepared for the counter attack from Travis Head. Travis Head put on a great show with the bat and Steve Smith as usual held his position on the other side without giving the bowlers any chance to get better of him. They both put on a 251-run stand and ended Day 1 on a high note with 327/3 on the board. Travis Head is 146*(156) and Steve Smith is 95*(227) and both have put Australia on the command.
In a latest video by ICC, players were asked to describe Steve Smith in a word. Virat Kohli described Steve Smith as “Amazing and The best Test batter of this generation”. Australian Captain Pat Cummins said, “He is a problem solver”. Shubman Gill described Steve Smith as “Discipline” and Ravichandran Ashwin described him as “Fidgety”. Shardul Thakur, David Warner, Mitchell Starc also described Steve Smith in one word.
