In a truly peculiar sequence of events during the 2023 CPL, Johnson Charles managed to avoid getting dismissed by inadvertently scooping the ball into his own face and then hilariously kicking his helmet away from the stumps.

In a Caribbean Premier League 2023 (CPL) match at Warner Park, St Kitts, St Lucia Kings openers Faf du Plessis and Johnson Charles made a rapid start after Trinbago Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard chose to field. Du Plessis was eventually caught by Andre Russell for a 36-ball 57, leaving Charles partnered with Bhanuka Rajapaksa.

When Dwayne Bravo began his spell, Charles played a quirky shot, inadvertently striking the grille of his helmet, causing it to fall towards the stumps. In a quick-thinking move, Charles raised his left leg to deflect the helmet, which then bounced off his hip and foot, rolling safely away.

Charles managed to avoid the fate of Adam Parore in 2000 when his helmet fell onto the stumps off a Brett Lee delivery. However, Charles couldn’t hold his ground for long, as Andre Russell dismissed him for 37 off 31 balls. Despite the brilliance of Dwayne Bravo, Andre Russell, and Akeal Hosein, St Lucia Kings posted 167-5.

Trinbago Knight Riders started shakily at 41-3 but Mark Deyal and Kieron Pollard’s explosive partnership brought the target down to 86 from 73 balls with seven wickets in hand. However, they collapsed seven overs later, as Kharry Pierre took 4-20, ending the innings at 127 all out.
