The second Ashes Test started on June 28, 2023. England won the toss and elected to bowl first. England made one change as injured Moeen Ali was replaced by Josh Tongue while Australia brought back Mitchell Starc in place of Scott Boland.

Australia posted a good total of 416 runs on the board in the first innings. In reply, England batters started off very well with Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. Ben Duckett played an outstanding knock of 98(134).

Australia moved to the short ball tactics against England and were getting good rewards of it. Ollie Pope, Ben Duckett were trapped with the short ball tactics. Joe Root, the best England batter also got trapped with the short ball twice. First he was caught behind on a bouncer ball, but Cameron Green overstepped and Joe Root got a chance.

But the second time, Mitchell Starc bowled a good bouncer to Joe Root’s body and he tried to pull it but didn’t get the connection right, and Steve Smith came running in and pulled off an absolute blinder to dismiss Joe Root. After he put in the dive, the ball for a moment was popping out, but Smith eventually held onto it.
