Yuvraj Singh picked his two key players for India’s T20 World Cup squad who might make the team lift the trophy this year.

With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad announcement deadline looming on May 1st, speculation is on the verge about which players will be donning the Indian jersey. Yuvraj Singh, the recently named brand ambassador for the upcoming T20 World Cup, has weighed in with his picks for the crucial roles.

Yuvraj identified two players as vital to India’s chances of clinching their second T20 World Cup title- batter Suryakumar Yadav and pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah. “Suryakumar Yadav (India’s key player), Because of the way he plays, he can change the complexion of a game in 15 balls. And he is a surety, for India to win this T20 World Cup, Surya is going to be the key,” Yuvraj was quoted as saying by the ICC.

Suryakumar Yadav has been in top-form in the ongoing IPL season, showcasing his ability to score rapidly and put pressure on opposing bowling attacks. Yuvraj clearly believes Yadav’s explosiveness will be a game-changer for India.

On the bowling front, Yuvraj emphasised the importance of a fit and firing Jasprit Bumrah. “I think Jasprit Bumrah is also the key with the bowling,” he added. Bumrah’s pace and accuracy are well-documented assets, and his presence in the bowling attack would undoubtedly bolster India’s chances.

Beyond these two stalwarts, Yuvraj also advocated for the inclusion of a specialist leg-spinner. “I would like to see a leg-spinner in the squad as well, like Yuzvendra Chahal, as he has been bowling well,” he remarked. Chahal’s experience and ability to take wickets could prove valuable, especially considering the spin-friendly conditions often encountered in T20 cricket.

Turning to the wicketkeeping position, Yuvraj acknowledged Dinesh Karthik’s recent batting form but expressed reservations about selecting him if he’s not guaranteed a starting spot. “DK (Karthik) has been batting well, but the thing with DK is that the last time (2022) they picked him and the T20 World Cup was on, he didn’t get to play. If DK is not in your XI, I don’t think there is any point in picking him,” said Singh.

Yuvraj also suggested that younger options like Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson might be more suitable choices, given their wicketkeeping skills and explosive batting styles.

Interestingly, Yuvraj’s picks are worth accepting and might even see daylight on May 1. However,  fans have to wait till the official release of the squad, after which India will be travelling to New York to play their first match of the campaign against Ireland on June 5th.
