Yuvraj Singh expressed his strong belief that Rohit Sharma deserves to captain India in the upcoming T20 World Cup with his exceptional leadership skills and consistent performance.
India’s quest to break their ICC tournament dry spell since 2013 faces the T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA next month, with past heartbreaks haunting them, including semi-final exits at the 2022 T20 World Cup and the 2023 World Test Championship final.
Yuvraj Singh, the T20 World Cup 2024 ambassador, stressed Rohit Sharma’s crucial role, citing his calm captaincy demeanor, evidenced by leading India in the 2023 Cricket World Cup final loss and clinching five IPL trophies as captain. Yuvraj advocated for Rohit to helm India’s team, emphasizing his ability to make sound decisions under pressure, vital for tournament success.
“(Rohit’s presence is going to be) very crucial. I think we need a really good captain, a sensible captain who takes decisions well under pressure. And he’s the one to take them,” Yuvraj said in an interview with ICC.
“He was the captain when we lost in the (Cricket World Cup) 50-over final (in 2023). He has won five IPL trophies as a captain. I think we need somebody like him to captain India,” he added.

Yuvraj also fondly recalled Rohit’s humble beginnings, praising his jovial nature, camaraderie, and leadership qualities. Despite Rohit’s immense success, Yuvraj noted his unchanged persona, highlighting his fun-loving demeanor and strong leadership both on and off the field.
“Very funny guy. From the streets of Borivali (in Mumbai), we always tease him. But a great guy at heart. The more success he’s had, he has never changed as a person. That’s the beauty of Rohit Sharma. Fun-loving, always having fun with the guys, A great leader on the park and one of my closest friends from cricket,” Yuvraj quipped.
“I really want to see Rohit Sharma with a World Cup trophy and a World Cup medal. He really deserves it,” he concluded.
