Ambati Rayudu took a firm stand while sharing a detailed insight on the 5-time IPL champions’ team culture and player nourishment.
Ambati Rayudu, a player who has worn the jerseys of both MI and CSK, offered a unique perspective on the contrasting team cultures within the IPL.
Rayudu, alongside Rohit Sharma, holds the record for most IPL titles won, having triumphed with both franchises. During a Star Sports appearance, he shed light on the distinct approaches of these two highly successful teams.
Rayudu characterised CSK’s environment as process-driven, with less emphasis on immediate results. He explained, “If we have to talk about culture, Chennai focuses more on the process. They do not analyse the results much. Their mood and mood swings are not because of the results,” said Rayudu of CSK. This fosters a sense of stability and reduces pressure on players. Rayudu believes this allows players to flourish over longer durations with the franchise. “You can play there longer,” he said, contrasting it with the high-pressure environment at MI.
According to Rayudu, MI embodies a win-at-all-costs mentality. “MI is a bit different. MI mostly wants to win, and their culture is that everything depends on winning. They have a culture of jeetna hi hai (win is a must). Winning is non-negotiable,” remarked Rayudu. This relentless pursuit of victory can be mentally taxing. Rayudu humorously stated, “If you play in MI for a long time, toh brain fatt jayega (your brain will explode).”

Despite the contrasting philosophies, Rayudu acknowledged the emphasis on performance in both franchises. “At the end of the day, both teams work hard,” he said. However, he suggested that improvement takes on a different form at each franchise. He elaborated, “When I used to play for MI, my game improved a lot. If you had not won the match, they would not see an excuse. At the end of the day, you have to perform,” added Rayudu.
Rayudu described CSK’s approach to development as more nurturing. “I feel CSK has a much better environment. Wahaan aapko better bana diya jaata hai, vo bhi aaram se At CSK, you are made better, and that too without any hassle,” he said.
Meanwhile, MI met CSK once in this tournament, where the former booked a 20-run defeat. Unfortunately, they will not face each other again in IPL 2024 in the group stages unless they both qualify for the playoffs.
