Virat Kohli incurred a 50% fine of his match fees for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct during RCB’s match against KKR, wherein he was dismissed and engaged in a heated argument with the umpires.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Virat Kohli was fined 50% of his match fees for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct during their Sunday match against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.
According to the official statement, Kohli committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.” Notably, for Level 1 breaches, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding. The statement further clarified that Kohli admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction.
The incident occurred during the third over of RCB’s innings when Kohli was dismissed by KKR fast bowler Harshit Rana. Kohli misplayed a full toss, hitting the ball back towards the bowler. While the KKR players celebrated, Kohli vehemently disagreed with the umpire’s call, believing the ball was above his waist and requested a review.

Replays showed the ball was indeed above Kohli’s waist on initial contact, but it dipped significantly before hitting the wickets. While Kohli’s stance had him outside the crease when he played the shot, the ball trajectory suggested it would have gone below the wickets had he been in his usual batting position, considering his height and the crease markers.
Unhappy with the umpire’s decision, Kohli engaged in a heated argument with them. His frustration continued as he walked back to the dugout, shouting and even kicking over a trash can after throwing his glove in anger.
Kohli’s dismissal seemed to have RCB losing their rock as the team failed to chase a challenging target of 223 and lost to KKR by a single run. Bengaluru will next face SRH on April 25th.
