The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala is set to get the first hybrid pitch adopting the SISGrass technology.
The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association’s (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala has become the first cricket ground in India to adopt SISGrass technology. This innovative approach aims to revolutionise pitches in the country, blending natural and artificial grass for increased durability and player safety.
SISGrass, developed in the Netherlands, utilises a special “universal machine” to introduce a 5% polymer fibre mix into the natural turf. This reinforcement enhances the pitch’s lifespan and overall quality. The technology has already succeeded in the United Kingdom, being implemented in iconic venues like Lord’s, Edgbaston, The Oval, and Old Trafford.
The need for SISGrass in India became evident during the 2023 ODI World Cup. The outfield at HPCA Stadium faced criticism due to instances of fielders sliding and damaging the turf. This new technology promises to address such issues and will be on display during the IPL 2024, with the Punjab Kings hosting two matches at Dharamsala.

Beyond the initial installation in Dharamsala, SISGrass has set its sights on Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The goal is to create high-quality pitches for both practice and matches across these major cricketing centres.
It marks a significant step forward for Indian cricket. According to a press release, “this cutting-edge technology will transform the game by providing a more durable, consistent, and high-performing playing surface.” Notably, HPCA president R.P. Singh said, “The arrival of ground-breaking hybrid pitch technology in India signifies a game-changing moment for our national cricket,” as quoted by The Hindu.
Paul Taylor, a former England cricketer and SIS’s international cricket director expressed enthusiasm regarding the introduction of this new technology to India. “As we inject new and improved technological advancements into India’s vibrant cricket ecosystem, we foresee a catalytic effect on its growth trajectory,” said Taylor.
