DC coach Ricky Ponting made his top pick for India’s T20 World Cup squad, citing the keeper’s remarkable comeback and growing impact, amidst considering other deserving options.
Lately, DC coach Ricky Ponting has taken up a call on the best wicketkeeper batter who might feature in the playing XI for India’s T20 World Cup squad. Besides naming Rishabh Pant, he named a few other options whom he would like to see playing in the Indian jersey.
The former Australian skipper mentioned that there are quite a few deserving names in the wicketkeeper-batter position. However, he would like to go with one whom he feels is the most deserving. “Do I believe Rishabh should be in the World Cup squad? Absolutely, I do. He deserves to be in that WT20 squad by the end of the IPL,” Ponting told PTI in an exclusive interview, as quoted by NDTV.
Ponting shared that many great options are currently in incredible form. “One thing we certainly know is that there is a lot of depth to Indian cricket. With keeper-batters, I feel some guys are in really good form at the moment. (Ishan) Kishan is playing well, (Sanju) Samson is playing well, and KL Rahul is playing well,” added Ponting.

However, he intended to have Pant as his number one choice. “There are a lot of options, but if I were picking a team, I would have Rishabh Pant in it every day of the week. Rishabh’s comeback to international cricket is nothing short of remarkable. As each game goes by, we are starting to see a better and better version of Rishabh Pant; his batting has had more impact in the last couple of games compared to the start of the tournament, and he is starting to move well behind the stumps,” the coach remarked, entrusting Pant’s continuously growing skills.
While Pant remains a favourite choice for the DC coach, his team, the Delhi Capitals, has not been doing well in the IPL as they are currently in the ninth position, winning two out of the six games they have played.
