Disputing the third umpire’s call, Rajasthan Royals’ director Kumar Sangakkara said they would address Sanju Samson’s dismissal with the umpires.
Sanju Samson’s dismissal during the Rajasthan Royals (RR) chase against the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Tuesday has become a major talking point. The RR skipper, batting well on 86 runs, was caught by Shai Hope near the boundary rope in a critical moment of the match.
Replays showed the catch was extremely close, with Hope seemingly touching the boundary rope while taking the catch. The third umpire’s quick decision to rule Samson out left both the batter and RR director of cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, unhappy.
“Depends on replays and angles. It was a difficult one for the third umpire to judge. The game was at a crucial stage, so it happens in cricket. Different perspectives. Even if we have any other opinion, we will share it with the umpires and sort it out. I thought, irrespective of that dismissal, RR still should have seen the game home,” Sangakkara said in the post-match press conference, as quoted by Sportskeeda.
Former England captain Paul Collingwood echoed Sangakkara’s concerns, suggesting the third umpire could have taken more time to analyse the replays from different angles. “The decision was so close, and these moments can have a big impact on the game,” Collingwood said.

The incident has reignited discussions about umpiring decisions in the IPL this season, with some calling for stricter protocols. Former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu went as far as saying the replay clearly showed Hope touching the rope twice, questioning the technology used. “The decision that changed the game was Sanju Samson’s dismissal. It touched the boundary line twice. And after this, if someone says that it’s out… see, I’m a neutral person, so I’ve seen it; it’s not out. That’s why I also kept saying it about Kohli. It’s like there’s a fly in milk, and someone asks you to drink it,” remarked Sidhu.
Meanwhile, the loss puts RR in second place on the league table after two consecutive defeats. DC, on the other hand, remains alive in the playoff race with two matches remaining.
