KL Rahul

After LSG’s crushing defeat to KKR on May 5th, Lucknow’s skipper, KL Rahul, lamented the team’s poor performance in all aspects.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper KL Rahul expressed strong disappointment after his team’s crushing 98-run defeat against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Notably, this loss marked the conclusion of their home games for the ongoing IPL season.

“Chasing a big total like 235 puts immense pressure on the batters. We tried to score quickly but ended up losing wickets at regular intervals. It was a poor performance overall, with the bat, ball, and in the field,” Rahul said during the post-match presentation, as quoted by News18.

He acknowledged the struggles of their young bowling attack, particularly against the explosive batting of KKR’s openers, Sunil Narine and Phil Salt. “We’ve seen how destructive Narine and Salt can be in the powerplay. Our young bowlers couldn’t handle the pressure they exerted, and Narine played some exceptional shots. That’s the nature of the IPL; you face top-quality players who test your character, and we weren’t up to the mark today,” explained KL Rahul.

However, KL Rahul defended the Lucknow pitch, stating it was not a batting nightmare. “The wicket was good for both sides. There was some bounce for bowlers who attacked the stumps, but it wasn’t unplayable. 235 was probably 20–30 runs more than par, and our batting just didn’t click,” he added.

He emphasised that the loss was not due to a lack of strategy but rather the inability to execute their plans. “We prepare well for each opponent and discuss their batting strengths. We also consider the pitch conditions and strategize accordingly. However, execution is key, and that’s where we faltered. The bowlers tried their best, especially the youngsters, but they’ll learn from this experience,” remarked Rahul.

Rahul pinpointed the early onslaught from Narine and Salt as the turning point of the match, saying, “Those early mistakes put our bowlers under pressure, and they crumbled under it. We’ve struggled against powerful openers like Narine before, and that puts immense pressure on our bowling attack.”

Despite the heavy defeat, LSG sits in the 3rd position on the IPL points table, and Rahul remains optimistic about the team’s remaining three matches, all of which will be away fixtures. “We’ll analyse our mistakes in the dressing room and move on. We need to win all our remaining games if we want to qualify for the top four. Playing away from home might give us a bit more freedom and allow us to be more fearless in our approach,” concluded the LSG skipper.
