Mitchell Starc silenced critics with a key four-wicket haul in KKR’s win over MI, downplaying his high economy rate and praising the team’s collaborative bowling attack.
Despite facing criticism for his economy rate throughout the season, Kolkata Knight Riders pacer Mitchell Starc emerged as a hero in their recent win against the Mumbai Indians. Starc’s four-wicket haul in the final spell proved decisive, restricting MI to just 145 runs and securing victory for KKR.
Starc, who entered the match with an economy rate of 11.40—his worst ever in the IPL—remained unfazed by the commentary. “There’s not been many bowlers go for runs, has there? (laughs),” he quipped with a laugh during the post-match press conference.
Shifting the focus to the team’s success, Starc emphasised the bigger picture. “Look, it’s been fantastic. We are sitting second [in the points table], so we’re doing really well,” he said.
Acknowledging his own early struggles, Starc adopted a pragmatic approach. “It is T20 cricket; things do not always go the way you want them to. Obviously, I would have liked to do better at the start, but it is what it is; we are sitting second; that’s all that matters,” admitted Starc.
Starc also praised the young bowling attack at KKR, highlighting their collaborative spirit. “I’m a bit more experienced and a bit older, and at the same time, I haven’t played a lot of T20 cricket. So, sort of working off each other in a way. But, yeah, we’ve got a really exciting bowling group. And they’ve shown that in the games they’ve played, they’ve taken some big wickets,” added the pacer.

Starc further elaborated on his role within the young bowling unit. “The guys that haven’t had an opportunity yet, they’re working really hard in the background. I’m certainly not there to tell people what to do. I’m happy to answer questions if they have and probably look to sort of lead more by example of training and whatnot, and get my work in and that sort of thing,” concluded Starc.
The star bowler led KKR to a comfortable victory at Wankhede and will be next seen facing LSG at Lucknow on May 5th.
