Suresh Raina criticised the Mumbai Indians for removing Rohit Sharma as captain, questioning the logic behind the decision and expressing his belief that Rohit should have remained the leader.
Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina sharply criticised the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) decision to remove Rohit Sharma as captain, which led Hardik Pandya to lead the team. This move has resulted in Hardik facing criticism, with fans even resorting to jeering him during matches.
Raina, while acknowledging that fans’ frustration is understandable, urged them to refrain from directing their anger towards Hardik or his family. “I don’t know why he [Rohit] was removed as captain. But MI is doing well now; they won the last match,” Raina said, as quoted by NDTV, before being corrected by the interviewer regarding MI’s win-loss record.
However, in a clear statement, Raina expressed his belief that Rohit should have remained the captain. “To be very honest, I feel Rohit should’ve remained as Mumbai Indians captain. But I think the management is looking to have a leader who is younger. Rohit, I think it is now 36 or 37,” said Raina.
Raina even hinted at the possibility of a reversal in the captaincy decision, suggesting Rohit could reclaim the captaincy if MI’s performance continues to decline. “This is still the start of the IPL. Only time will tell if this decision was right or not. If MI fails in 3–4 more matches, Rohit could be re-appointed as captain,” Raina suggested, highlighting the possible shift in captaincy.

He further questioned the logic behind removing a captain who is still leading the Indian national team. “I agree; that is what even I asked. I am not sure what the management thought,” said Raina.
Currently, the Mumbai Indians find themselves positioned precariously at number 6 in the IPL points table, having managed only 3 wins in 7 matches. They will be looking forward to bagging more wins as they face the Rajasthan Royals on April 22nd.
