Kumar Sangakkara firmly supported Sanju Samson as India’s top T20 World Cup keeper, citing Samson’s exceptional form, leaving the final decision to Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma.
Rajasthan Royals’ director of cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, shared insights on Sanju Samson’s batting ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, expressing confidence in Samson’s form and naming him as India’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batter for the tournament in the USA and West Indies this June. Sangakkara emphasized that the final decision rests with skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid regarding the team’s combination.
With Samson’s impressive performance in the ongoing IPL, where he amassed 471 runs in 11 matches, Sangakkara believes Samson has solidified his position for the World Cup.
“It’s really up to Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma and how they see the combination. But he has made his case, so hopefully he’ll have a good run in the World Cup,” Sangakkara told the reporters.
In contrast, Rishabh Pant, also a part of India’s T20 World Cup squad, showcases strong form with 413 runs in 12 matches.

Sangakkara also emphasized Samson’s advantage, attributing it to his clear mindset. He highlighted Samson’s improved clarity in approach this season, addressing past issues of losing concentration during certain game stages.
“With Sanju, the biggest thing about this season for him is having a lot of clarity about the way he should bat. There are certain stages of the game that he seems to lose a bit of concentration, which we’ve addressed from past seasons,” Sangakkara said.
“He’s changed his mindset about the importance of rest and recovery, rather than just training all the time and being tired mentally and physically. He’s a special player and when he’s fresh and focused there’s nothing he can’t do,” he concluded.
