Shubman Gill weighed in on the Impact Player rule debate in the IPL, expressing his disapproval, as he believes it allows teams to maintain an aggressive batting approach throughout the innings.

The Impact Player rule introduced in this season’s IPL has stirred up debates among players and fans, with Gujarat Titans’ captain Shubman Gill joining the discussion. This rule allows teams to substitute a player with someone from the bench after the toss and before the 14th over of either innings.

While the rule aims to add strategic depth, Gill and others have raised concerns. He believes this rule gives teams an unfair advantage by allowing them to bring in fresh players halfway through the innings, maintaining an aggressive batting approach without worrying about losing wickets. Gill expressed his disapproval, emphasizing that this disrupts the natural flow of the game, particularly in crucial middle-overs.

“I think Impact Player has a bit of a role in that. Even if you lose wickets in the powerplay or the middle overs. You know every team has a cushion. So, they just keep going, and to be able to get to a good start, they can’t just play out in middle overs. They need to keep going and get a good score in the end,” Gill said during the post-match presentation.

Several Team India players, including Axar Patel, Mukesh Kumar, and Rohit Sharma, had earlier voiced concerns about the Impact Player rule in the IPL. Rohit was among the first to criticize the rule, fearing it would disadvantage all-rounders. In a recent appearance on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, he emphasized that cricket is played by eleven players, not twelve, suggesting that the rule disrupts the game’s traditional balance.

The IPL is witnessing a surge in high-scoring matches, with five out of the six highest totals in tournament history occurring this season. Teams now find surpassing the 220-run mark more achievable, with consistent performances across the board.
