Sourav Ganguly opened up regarding the opening pair of India for the T20 World Cup and how the team should approach the tournament.
Sourav Ganguly, former BCCI president and current Director of Cricket for the Delhi Capitals, shared his opinion on how India should approach the upcoming T20 World Cup. During a media event in Delhi, Ganguly emphasised the importance of aggressive batting in T20 cricket. “Fearless” intent, he argued, is the key to success in the shortest format.
“The most important thing for India is to play without fear. There is no hard-and-fast rule about age and playing youngsters in T20Is. Look at James Anderson, still playing Tests and bowling long spells. MS Dhoni is still hitting big sixes, and both are well into their 40s. Six-hitting is crucial, and Virat has the capability to score a 40-ball century. It’s all about playing freely and aggressively in T20Is,” stated Ganguly, as quoted by News18.
His statement paved the way for a more significant revelation, which is Ganguly’s personal preference for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as India’s opening pair. “It’s my personal opinion that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should open for India in the T20 World Cup. India needs to set the tone early by going out and hitting from the start. Rohit, Virat, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, and Hardik Pandya—all these players are exceptional talents with tremendous six-hitting abilities,” suggested the southpaw.

Further Ganguly acknowledged the need for a balanced squad, combining experience with youthful talent. “There needs to be a balance of experience and youth. This is true for any great team. You have to consider all the performances, both in the IPL and international matches. The experienced Indian players are phenomenal because of their consistent performances over the years,” added Ganguly.
Nevertheless, the finalised T20 World Cup squad for India will be released soon as the deadline is near, addressing all the concerns of fans and experts. Meanwhile, team India will head into the campaign on June 5th against Ireland.
