Virender Sehwag criticized Sam Curran’s role in the Punjab Kings, stating that players who are average in both batting and bowling are ineffective.
In the ongoing IPL season, Punjab Kings have faced challenges, especially with skipper Shikhar Dhawan sidelined due to injury. Sam Curran has stepped in as captain but couldn’t turn things around, as seen in their recent loss to Gujarat Titans, marking their sixth defeat.
Curran’s performance in the match, scoring just 20 runs and taking a wicket, drew criticism from former cricketer Virender Sehwag. He expressed doubts about Curran’s effectiveness, stating that he wouldn’t select him for the squad in his current form.
Emphasizing the need for specialization, Sehwag argued that players who juggle both batting and bowling roles are ineffective, believing that success comes from excelling in one area rather than being average in both.
“If I was in the PBKS dugout, I would not even pick him in my team, neither as a batting all-rounder nor as a bowling all-rounder. I wouldn’t pick him”, Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.
“A player is not of any use if he can bowl a bit and bat a bit. You either bat properly and win us the match, or you bowl and win us the game. This bits and pieces part I don’t understand,” he added.

Curran’s performance in IPL 2024 includes 152 runs in eight innings, with just one half-century, and 11 wickets for PBKS. Following Punjab’s loss to GT, he admitted they were 10-15 runs short and acknowledged their poor performance post-powerplay. Curran also emphasized the team’s do-or-die situation, recognizing the necessity to win every game to stay in contention.
Punjab Kings’ IPL 2024 journey has been tough, with only two wins out of eight matches, placing them ninth with four points. Their playoff chances seem slim, with each loss edging them closer to elimination. They face Kolkata Knight Riders next for a challenging match at Eden Gardens on April 26.
